Southern railroad signatory to Southeastern Conference Agreement blocking promotions of blacks to railroad firemen positions, against which the Fair Employment Practice Committee (FEPC) held hearings in 1943. FEPC issued directive setting aside agreement as discriminatory, supported by Supreme Court decisions in Steele and Tunstall cases. Challenged FEPC directive. NAACP fought segregated seating on line in 1950s.
