Incorporated in New Jersey in 1902, was largest maker of steel castings in U.S.; had plants in East St. Louis, Ill., Granite City, Illinois, Alliance, Ohio, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Sharon, Pennsylvania, and Chester, Pennsylvania. Produced shells as well as castings used for manufacturing atomic bombs. In July 1944, black workers at Granite City site launched wildcat walkouts over wage dispute and alleged abuse by white foreman. Its Indiana Harbor Works was referred to Fair Employment Practice Committee (FEPC) by Justice Department in 1943 as place of possible race trouble.
